Givens Home First, a unique program that empowers older adults to age gracefully in the comfort of their own homes, reports a positive reception for its local expansion initiative.

Givens Communities, a nonprofit senior services organization based in Asheville, saw the need for in-home services to meet the demands of an increasing older demographic across the region. Givens Home First was established for those who prefer maintaining independence and staying in the comfort of familiar surroundings.

“This program has been carefully designed to meet the needs of older adults who want to age gracefully in their own home and community,” said Julie Moses, director of aging in place programs of Givens Home First and a Certified Aging in Place specialist and seasoned occupational therapy assistant. “Specially trained professionals can help find resources to make daily life easier by working to form an individualized care plan.”

Western North Carolina has a higher proportion of people 65 and older than the rest of North Carolina. Projections estimate that the region will have more than 265,799 people aged 65+ by 2038.

Living at home as you age requires careful consideration and planning, according to the National Institute on Aging, which states the first step is to think about the kinds of help needed now and might want in the future. Planning ahead allows time to set up a home to meet specific needs as you age.

Community organizations, housing providers, and local leaders are encouraged to explore potential partnerships with Givens Home First to help bring these services to more individuals. For additional information go to www.givenshomefirst.org and 828-575-1078.
