Givens Communities, an Asheville-based senior living nonprofit organization, announces a partnership with the innovative Purple Spaces program as a commitment to disrupt the cycle of domestic abuse.

Recognizing that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetimes and addressing the fact that 75% of domestic abuse victims are harassed at work (with 90% reporting that the abuse impacts job performance) Givens Communities is dedicated to creating a safer and more supportive workplace.

This collaboration marks a significant step in an ongoing effort for social responsibility and team member wellbeing.

Purple SpacesPurple Spaces, in collaboration with Helpmate, an Asheville and Buncombe County domestic abuse support agency, is a pioneering program where businesses play a vital role in providing a safe haven for Givens team members affected by domestic abuse. Helpmate provides free emergency shelter, counseling and support for abuse survivors and their children.

With the resources and assistance provided by this program, Givens Communities will train volunteer Purple Space Champions within the organization to offer guidance and support to colleagues impacted by domestic abuse.

Givens Communities encourages others in Asheville to join this vital initiative. “We have the privilege and responsibility to work towards creating a safer, more supportive community. By educating ourselves and others we can disrupt the cycle of domestic abuse and work toward a better future,” said Baylee Avera, director of Human Resources with Givens Communities. “Helpmate and Purple Spaces are essential programs and provide so much support to the area. We are honored to be able to partner with them and believe this initiative speaks to our core values; Make a difference, People passionate, Do what is right, and Power of community.”

Part of the efforts include awareness and education on the signs and implications of domestic abuse, fostering a culture of support and understanding; actively showcasing the partnership with Purple Spaces and Helpmate, and ongoing engagement to maintain a strong, active relationship that underlines an ardent stance against domestic abuse.
